Momentum Large Diffrences in Mass

I have read in numerous publications that where there are large diffrences in mass momentum analysis does not render reliable results. Specificaly I am dealing with a case where a tire came off a vehicle and struck an oncoming vehicle at highway speeds. The tire is a minimal fraction of the vehicle's weight. Would momentum render erronous results? If anyone has delt with this issue or knows of papers on momentum and mass differentials please advise. Thank-you.
