Using momentum conservation can produce results that are rather sensitive to approach/departure angles, depending upon what those angles are. If you have sufficient information to calculate, say, pre-impact speeds, then once you've done that, see if the results are consistent with crush energy equalling the differences in the kinetic energies. It can give a check on your results.
