My company conducted an extensive research project for the British
Columbia Ministry of Transportation and Highways. For this project we
conducted numerous braking and traction tests on snow and ice under
various atmospheric conditions.
Included was a series of tests performed on the ice in a hockey
arena some of which were done just below freezing with water poured on
the ice. G-Analyst skid test data indicated a value of 0.05 for these
conditions. The tests were done using a 1993 Caprice police car with
Comp T/A M+S tires (225/70R15). This test series was halted following
two tests because it was just too slippery and the danger of vehicle
damage was too great.
In the same hockey arena we tested a variety of different tires
under identical conditions using our friction testing machine (built to
ASTM E 274-85). We found a range of values from 0.05 to 0.14 on rough
arena ice at -5 degrees Celcius.
