The following is an excerpt from Accident Reconstruction for Bicycle-involved Traffic Collisions written by W.R. Rusty Haight and Jerry J. Eubanks. Both Mr. Eubanks and Mr. Haight are instructor's for Texas A M's Engineering Extension Service. They write:
Usually 'normal' casual riding pedal rates fall in the area of 50 to 80 rpm. The rpm rate can go as high as 100-110 rpm and higher for racing cyclists. Experienced racing cyclists can often achieve rates as high as 160-175 rpm but not usually for prolonged periods.
