I have to agree with Raphael Martello about the sun. About 10 years ago I was called to the scene of a bicycle/automobile collision where the speed of the car was in question. When I arrived I received an apology from the patrolman who advised me there were no skid marks. I observed the involved car off on the grass and where it had left the road all four tires had cut marks in the grass. There were, however, no visible marks on the asphalt. I walked back some distance and located scratches in the road surface much like pebbles will leave when trapped in the tread of a tire. After I determined the POI from a bicycle tire deflection mark on the road (which took some time I might add) I went back to where I had observed the scratches. Low and behold I could now see the full skid mark - the reason - the sun was setting. Contrast it seems is very important in locating "missing" skid marks.
