Air bag sensors

I hope someone knows how airbag sensors work, and can explain it here. Where are they located on the vehicle? I assume there is a threshold acceleration which triggers them, or is the threshold one which responds to "jerk" = "rate of acceleration?"
Finally, can an airbag be deployed as the result of an impact from the rear?
Thanks as usual ==> Dick
