In my opinion, 40 to 45 mph sounds pretty fair for a standard truck (not 4wd, or jacked up).
Some other considerations that initially crossed my mind would be; was the sun in the driver's eyes, what clothing was the ped wearing and its visibility, what part of roadway was the ped in and where was he traveling to (ie. crossing street, or walking with or against traffic), what is the speed limit for the roadway, and what is the driver's history for items that may have contributed to not seeing the ped (ie. glasses, age, driving history)
Sounds like a typical reconstruction where all your evidence has been eliminated or tainted. Good luck, we've all been there!
