Jim,

Thanks for helping Joe, he's a good guy. I sent him the response to this equation this morning. The equation comes from "Expert Autostats". My impression is that it is Dr. Vomhoff's derivative of a linar regression equation based on maximum crush, and impact speed from NHTSA crash testing (and about a 1,000 others according to the publication), but not truly a "NHTSA formula".
