Thanks, and true. Many shear base poles are designed to fail transversely at a particular load. Installation procedures can greatly effect this value as typically it is the manner in which bolts at the base will fail.

I guess what I was after was some concensus as to which method people were using. NTSB's pole formula, Mason/Whitcomb's pole eqn's, Linear regression
eqn's, speed from crush, Breakaway Fracture Energy values, Nystrom/Kost, etc.

Also be aware that narrow pole impact's may tend to effect airbag performance, more on this later.
