I also saw a MBZ representative who said that a stuck speedometer was analogous to putting your wristwatch on the dash, and when the collision happens your head head smashes the crystal and freezes the time. He said the same thing happens with the speedometer needle.
My thought was how about the airbag and steering wheel and energy absorbing column that you have to get through BEFORE you reach the speedometer. Not to mention those seatbelted folks.
I also wonder if "armored" vehicles aren't more typically bullet resistant glass and kevlar type panels as opposed to the "armored truck" structures. Either way adds weight to a stock design that doesn't report to do much more than 100 mph.
