If your camera is a cable release type, the longer, air-activated cables are cheap.
You might also want to look into the newer instamatic camera. A lot of them come with an infra-red remote trigger. Depending on the quality of pictures you are after, this system works quite well. I have a friend who is a product investigator with GM who uses this type of system regularily.

These photos are excellent to profile the damage for presentationin court etc.. I have also scanned them and "traced" them with autosketch for inclusion in the diagrams.
