I investigated an accident last month which required measuring the coefficient of friction (COF) on an asphalt shoulder. Since the shoulder normally does not get travelled on it gets a build up of dirt and small grit sized rocks. Although there was not much of this debris it was enough to reduce the COF to a .65 (drag sled). The COF for the travelled portion of the same roadway (measured 1 foot away from the shoulder and in the same direction was .81.
