O.k., I understand now. Ken Campbell speaks of this in his paper "Energy Basis for Collision Severity". Essentially you partition the structure up into a series of boxes and assign each box a number which represents the quantity of energy absorbed in units of velocity squared. One would trace the damage pattern from the involved vehicle onto the sectioned off model and add the numbers and portions of numbers for boxes that are segmented by the damage pattern. The square root of the sum is then the EBS velocity. The same basic function is performed, as you integrate the width and depth of damage with the particular stiffness coefficients. Though one has to convert from the integrated amount of energy to velocity. See Dr. Campbell's paper for further on this topic. It is a good paper.
