By the brief comment on the paper "Priorities of real car crashes and the agreement of real accidents with results from crash testing" (K. Langwieder, H. Bäumler, HUK-Verband) this method seems to work by having a "Energy Screen" of the car, in wich the car is divided in several areas, each of it having an associated energy. Drawing the line of the deformation suffered by the car, the energy dissipated will be the sum of the energies associated to the areas affected by the deformation. I think it is the same method mentioned by Fricke in Traffic Accident Reconstruction, topic 892, page 92-14.
