I agree with Rustys' testing as reported by Dr. schmidt. A few years ago I went out on the freeway after installing a tri-axis accelerometer into a contemporary American sedan. I made dramatic (sudden) swerves, changing lanes. The maneuvers were controlled but bordered on being uncomfortable. I then took the data to average the recorded lateral G's. The average lateral value was about 0.25 G. For a more leisurely lane change the value would be lesser, for an out of control panic swerve it could be greater.
