Kevin:

I had one case of unintended acceleration with a Cherokee. It was a mid-90's model. The vehicle was being driven by a relative of the owner who had no prior experience with the vehicle. The driver started the vehicle, the vehicle accelerated, and hit a tree.

The driver claimed he had his foot on the brake the entire time. I checked the vehicle and found no mechanical problems. It had an automatic transmission and I did note that it did not have an interlock to prevent taking it out of park without depressing the brake pedal.

I believe this has been the subject of a recent investigation by NHTSA. Try looking at www.nhtsa.gov
