We've done some testing, but asphalt is too generic a term. Do you know what the actual mix was?

Generally, the "new" surface needs a little time to dry out and road traffic helps it both dry out and settles the mixture around the gravel bits. Unusual weather during application will cause some mixtures to "unravel" and come apart which tends to have a lower average friction factor. The mix usually has a range of ambient temperature for application as well as a temperature range for the mix itself. If applied outside of these parameters less desireable friction values may result.
