I have found very favorable results from using the SOKKIA line of total station data collector and MAP software.
The MAP software besides literally drawing the diagram for me also permits a very professional analysis from data
collected for CONTOUR PROFILE and/or CROSS-SECTION analysis as may be needed.
I recently testified in Circuit court (murder case) and although the defense protested the finished topo map the
Judge reaffirmed it's use as a valuable tool for a forensic investigator (be they public or private).

I / we don't do s_rveying! Instead it's FORENSIC MAPPING .....
