Brian,
My experience supports Vic's major point. The structural engagement you have described is a softer upper structure (Taurus) vs. a stiffer lower structure (Truck). That structural combination tends to extend the contact duration and thus, lower the peak forces which are necessary to activate the system. Analytically, it'll take some expertise to get a speed as a function of damage. Also, I'm sure having your hood rush at you is an unpleasant experience for a driver.
