I've never had to remove a sensor to examine it post-crash, but I
have taken some apart after purchasing them new and your work is cut
out for you. The Breed mechanical sensor (the one using the ball and
magnet) is encased in a hard plastic substance and then covered with a
metal jacket. This seems to be a common arrangement. I'm not at all
sure what tearing one down might actually reveal (unless there was
some obvious physical defect). I've spoken to people regarding the
rolamite type (the ones with the unwinding spring) and they indicated
that there may or may not be some electric scoring when the sensor
is triggered. That might tell you that the sensor fired. Getting info
from the electronic control module is probably the best source of
data. The data could include delta v, safing sensor closures, self
test results, and even driver seat belt usage in some cases. Getting
someone to download the data is likely to be the biggest obstacle. It
has to be done right or the data gets wiped. Also, there is a
proprietary aura around all this that I'm not sure I fully understand.
The downloaded data is just a jumble of numbers and letters so there
is also a need for interpretation.
