The Traffic Accident Reconstruction Origin -ARnews-
|
I've been stiffed a couple of times over the years (believe it or not,
the attorneys are the worst....). I also used to be a cop but the old blood
pressure kicked me out of the saddle. Thank God, my reconstruction practice
has become pretty stable but only after 15 years of tending, etc. On the other
hand, I also teach about an average of 1 week out of four.
To those pondering making it rich via recon... here's a little pearl...
You could be the best reconist around, but you'll fail if you're not ALSO a
GOOD business person... and have sufficient "seed" money (80% of all small
businesses fail within two years due to a lack of capital). These guys weren't
kidding when they mention "dry spells" or cycles.
I'm aware of SEVERAL good people who decide to get the typical 6-weeks of
training at any of the several good training entities... they get "certified."
(I'd be surpised if anyone straight off the press could pass the very worthwhile
ACTAR process.) Then they quit their jobs and hang out a shingle..... and slowly
starve to death before taking any janitorial job they can get!
My advice would be to become GOOD at reconing... then, at least go to the local
community college and take a few "ABC's of starting a small business" type of
courses. You'd be smart to phase out of your current employment over a period
of, ohhhh, say about 2-5 years... get a solid list of return client's. And then
be prepared financially to weather out a 6-month "dry-spell" during which no
money comes in, but the bills still have to be paid. And by the way... all of
the advertising in the world won't work other than word of mouth (in my experience).
They say that crime doesn't pay... but neither does police work! Reconing, when
done right, can become worthwhile on its own but only after paying some serious
dues over several years.
Good luck to any new-comers!
